Blue Ice Hike

Folgefonni Breførarlag has arranged this tour since 1994. Blue ice hike in Juklavass Glacier starts daily, 7 days a week from May/June until the end of September (see booking schedule for exact dates). We offer different levels of difficulty, from easy hiking to challenging ice climbing, this means Blue Ice hike fits everyone between 7-80 years old in normal health conditions. Duration app. 5-6 hours. The blue ice hike is possible to do as a day tour from Bergen in the main season with public transport. It is possible to buy packets with public transport. Normally we also offer pickup service from Jondal, but due to Coronavirus, this is not possible in 2020.

Facts
The daily trip starts from Fonna Glacier Ski Resort in Jondal (1200m a.s.l.). There is asphalt road (19 km) all the way from the village Jondal by the fiord to Fonna Glacier Ski Resort, (follow traffic signs to Folgefonna), note there is a toll station after 8 km, cost 100 NOK for a car to pass. The glacier fall Juklavass Glacier consists of both calm, flat ice and more challenging crevasse areas. The tour is adapted to the participator' wishes and conditions. In the middle of the blue ice hike, we take a break where we have a view of the North Sea and the Rosendal alps. We will tell you about the culture and physical geography. In the afternoon light, we walk back with the fjord and mountains below us.

Season
This is a daily trip from mid-May (depending on snow conditions) until the beginning of October. Outside of this period, the trip has to be pre-booked a longer time ahead, and the price will be different. The public transport to the glacier is available from 22th of June to 9th of August 2020. Outside our main season mid-May until the beginning of October, the glacier is covered with snow, then we offer cross-country skiing or snowshoes hikes.

Total time length
5-6 hours. The trip is about 5-6 km in total walking distance.

Equipment
Please bring your personal warm, wind-and waterproof clothing (depending on weather), gloves, mountain boots (if you have your own), food and something to drink. Sunglasses and sun lotion is recommended. Included in the price you will get crampons, ice-axe, harness, helm, rope, and mountain boots (if you do not have your own). We provide mountain boots in sizes from 33 to 48 (EUR).

We do not offer rental of clothing and gloves in the 2020 season due to coronavirus, but we sell water/windproof clothing and gloves in case you have forgotten to bring. For sale, we also have sunglasses, sun lotion, maps, snacks, lunch food (please send e-mail in front of the trip if you want to buy these things).

Price
890 NOK pr. person, price includes all necessary glacier equipment also mountain boots. 10 % discount for families (min 3 persons). Only payment in online booking or by credit card (no cash in 2020 due to Coronavirus).

If you want your own glacier guide (for 1-12 persons), the price for a Private Guide is 6500 NOK this includes all glacier equipment. Start time, total length, and challenge can be adjusted for your group. This is recommended if you want to bring small children or want to do real ice climbing. 

Fitting for
All people above 7-8 years old and in normal health conditions. We normally have two glacier guides or more every day, you can then choose to walk an easy or more challenging tour on the glacier.

Meeting point
At our building at Fonna Glacier Ski Resort. It is a 19 km drive from the village Jondal by the fjord towards Fonna Glacier Ski resort. Follow traffic signs to "Folgefonna" from Jondal. There is a toll on the road in “Krossdalen”, 100 NOK (pay by card). In the main season there is public transport (bus) corresponding to the trip, arrive 10:55. Bus leaves ski center 15:30, please inform your glacier guide if you plan to catch the bus down again after the trip. The start time for the tour is 11:00 AM.

Travel to Jondal

From Bergen with your own car, 1, 5 hours (80 km) to Tørvikbygd, then 20 minutes by ferry to Jondal. There is also a daily bus from Bergen in the summer season, check route planner (www.skyss.no), or visit the tourist information in Bergen or our booking center Juklafjord in Jondal for details. From 22.6 to 9.8 in 2020 there is a public bus to the start point, outside this period we offer pick-up service (NOT in 2020 due to Coronavirus)
